Profile
Allan is a highly regarded litigator known for his disciplined thinking, sound judgment, and ability to bring clarity to complex disputes. Clients rely on him for thoughtful, strategic advocacy that is grounded in careful analysis and focused on advancing their objectives. He approaches each matter with precision and a measured perspective, identifying what will influence the outcome and directing effort where it will have the greatest impact.
His practice encompasses a broad range of civil litigation, including complex commercial disputes, professional responsibility matters, defamation, public law, class actions, and cases involving incorporated societies. He regularly appears before the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Court of Appeal and has also appeared before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. This experience across courts and subject areas allows him to identify strategic opportunities and arguments that may not be immediately apparent, particularly in matters that require both technical depth and practical judgment.
Clients have described his work as both rigorous and highly effective. In one significant matter, a client noted that “[he] mastered a complex and technical subject area and skillfully handled an intense litigation process. His dedication and energy were unparalleled, and we cannot recommend him highly enough.”
Earlier in his career, Allan clerked for justices of the British Columbia Court of Appeal, gaining direct insight into how appellate courts assess arguments and reach decisions. He completed his legal education at Dalhousie Law School, where he received numerous academic awards, and pursued graduate studies at Simon Fraser University, publishing an award-winning paper. He has also served as President of the Advocates’ Club and chaired the Canadian Bar Association’s Administrative Law section. In addition, he serves on the board of Instruments Beyond Borders, supporting access to music education for disadvantaged youth.
Clients value Allan for his credibility, clarity, and steady approach to complex litigation.
(For your reference, Allan, I used this testimonial: “We retained Gudmundseth Mickelson to handle a multi-million-dollar contract dispute. Howard Mickelson, K.C. and Allan Doolittle mastered a complex and technical subject area and skillfully handled an intense litigation process. Their dedication and energy was unparalleled, and we cannot recommend them highly enough.” - David Eisler, Managing Director, Regiment Equity Partners Inc., and Mike Martin, Director of Sedulus Capital Ltd.)
